External scholarships are a great resource to secure additional funding to attend the College or University of your choice. It also helps families in reducing their loan liability. External scholarships can be transferred to the school of your choice and students should constantly work on securing multiple scholarships. Below are some suggestions to assist you with looking for funding.

- Internet searches
- Major department at institution attending
- Scholarship department at institution attending
- Community organizations/foundations
- High school counselor
- Professional organizations – via your major and interests
- Churches ➢ Local city, county and government organizations
- State and Federal sources, i.e., Department of Education and State Authority
- Scholarship websites
Make sure you do your research to ensure that all organizations are legitimate.
Know your stats, GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Know your financial status. Do you have enough funding to cover your costs? What is your current and/or anticipated loan debt? How much will you need to be 100% financially covered for the 2026-2027 academic year. Keep a clear account of all of the scholarships that you have applied for. Track your progress by posting your information via an Excel Spreadsheet. Information should include:
- Organizations name
- Contact information (email address, phone number, coordinators name)
- Scholarship deadline date.
- Date application submitted.
- Date application received by the organization.
- Dates of when supporting documentation i.e., special circumstances letter (for need based or emergency scholarships) and/or when additional supporting documentation was submitted.
- Dates of at least 4 – 5 ways that you followed up on your application. Follow up should include a thank you card or note thanking the coordinator for reviewing your application, introductory video (business casual attire), special circumstance letter, phone and email follow up to check status. Note: Create unique letterhead and business card to put a personal touch to your correspondence.
- Date of decision – awarded/not awarded.
Do research on the scholarship organization? This will allow you to make sure that you understand the organization’s requirements, purpose and intent of the scholarship. It also allows you to have relevant conversations regarding your ability to represent the organization when networking for the award.
- Keep a copy of essays, headshots (business casual attire), transcripts, tests score (SAT/ACT), resumes, letters of recommendation and special circumstances letters in an electronic and hard copy files. This will allow you to submit timely scholarship applications.
- Submit complete applications and requested supporting documentation, prior to the application deadline.
- Schedule times weekly for your scholarship search and follow up. Commit to at least 1-2 hours no less than three days a week, until you receive your desired result.
