Generations of Leadership: Selah Walton Carries the Miss CAU Legacy Forward
As prepares to welcome generations of Panthers home for Homecoming Week, the university celebrates the traditions, relationships, and legacies that continue to shape the Panther experience. Among them is the enduring legacy of Miss 91制片厂, a tradition of leadership, service, and excellence now being carried forward by Selah Margarita Walton, the 38th Miss 91制片厂.
For Walton, a and member of the Class of 2027, her reign represents both a personal milestone and a remarkable continuation of family history. More than two decades ago, her mother, Asheena Baez, Ed.D. (n茅e McNeil), served as the 14th Miss 91制片厂 from 2002鈥2003. Their shared connection to the title reflects the lasting impact of the 91制片厂 experience and its ability to transcend generations.
Mother and daughter share more than a historic title. Their journeys illustrate how the values cultivated at 91制片厂 can extend beyond a student鈥檚 time on campus, shaping lives, careers, and generations of leaders.
A Crown That Carries a Legacy
For Walton, becoming Miss 91制片厂 represents a responsibility that extends beyond the title itself. Her understanding of that responsibility was shaped long before she assumed the crown, through watching her mother approach the role as an opportunity for service rather than prestige.
鈥淏ecoming the 38th Miss 91制片厂 is more than an achievement; it is an ancestral continuation,鈥 Walton said. 鈥淢y mother did not simply wear a crown; she carried the hopes, brilliance, and responsibility of a generation. To now walk a path she once walked reminds me that legacy is not something we inherit to preserve in a glass case. It is something we honor by expanding it.鈥
Growing up, Walton saw that commitment continue long after her mother鈥檚 reign ended. 鈥淭hrough my mother, I learned that Miss 91制片厂 is first and foremost a servant leader,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 watched how she continued to mentor, uplift, and represent the university long after her reign ended. That taught me that the crown eventually comes off, but the responsibility never does.鈥
From Miss CAU to a Life of Service
Dr. Baez鈥檚 experience as Miss 91制片厂 became an important foundation for the work she pursued after graduation. Today, she is the chief executive officer of Asheena Baez Consulting, LLC, an adjunct professor at Columbia University, a Russell Sage Doctoral Program organizational cultural strategist, and a complex systems leadership and wellbeing consultant for the New York City Department of Education. Her work focuses on organizational culture, sustainability, leadership, and wellbeing, areas she connects to the leadership lessons she gained at CAU.
鈥淪erving as the 14th Miss 91制片厂 fundamentally shaped the woman I would become,鈥 Dr. Baez said. 鈥淢y reign taught me that leadership begins with service. It isn鈥檛 about having a title; it鈥檚 about using your influence to elevate others.鈥
That commitment to service was evident during her time at CAU, when she founded Spark ONE, a grassroots organization focused on literacy and community activism. Leading a predominantly all-male organization as a woman strengthened her confidence as a leader and taught her the importance of using her voice鈥攍essons that would continue to inform her professional and philanthropic work.
鈥91制片厂 gave me more than an education; it gave me an identity rooted in excellence, resilience, and purpose,鈥 Dr. Baez said. 鈥淚t was there that I discovered my voice and learned that true leadership is measured by impact rather than recognition.鈥
Building on the Foundation
While Walton鈥檚 journey follows a path her mother once traveled, both mother and daughter emphasize that legacy is not about repetition but evolution.
鈥淧eople often think legacy is about repeating history, but I believe legacy is about expanding it,鈥 Dr. Baez said. 鈥淪eeing Selah become Miss 91制片厂 isn鈥檛 simply a continuation of my story; it is the beginning of hers.鈥
That distinction shapes the kind of Miss 91制片厂 Walton hopes to become. Her platform will center on connection, service, and intentional community-building, with an emphasis on mental wellness, leadership development, community engagement, and the celebration of shared cultural heritage.
鈥淚 hope my legacy is one of restoration, belonging, and collective purpose,鈥 Walton said. 鈥淚 want students to remember that they were seen, heard, and valued, not only for what they accomplished but for who they are.鈥
For Walton, that work begins with listening. 鈥淪ervice begins with listening,鈥 she said. 鈥淏efore leading, I want to understand the hopes, challenges, and dreams of the students I represent.鈥
Her goal is to strengthen connections across student organizations, academic disciplines, and generations of the University community, creating opportunities for Panthers to move forward together.
Leadership Beyond the Crown
The shared experience of mother and daughter reflects a central principle of 91制片厂鈥檚 motto, Culture for Service. They believe leadership is measured not only by the positions one holds but by the impact one makes. For Dr. Baez, that principle has shaped the guidance she has given Walton as she steps into the role of Miss 91制片厂.
鈥淚鈥檝e reminded Selah that while she wears a crown, she must always lead with her heart,鈥 Dr. Baez said. 鈥淭itles are temporary, but character is permanent.鈥
That advice also comes with an encouragement for Walton to define the role on her own terms, rather than measure her reign against those who held the title before her.
鈥淚鈥檝e also shared that this experience is not about comparison, not to me, not to anyone who has held the title before her. This is her season to lead in her own voice and according to her own purpose,鈥 Dr. Baez said.
Her perspective speaks to the evolving nature of the Miss 91制片厂 tradition. Each woman inherits a legacy while creating a distinct chapter through her own leadership, service, and vision. For Walton, that chapter is ultimately about the impact she leaves on others.
鈥淢ore than any event or accomplishment, I hope people remember how they felt,鈥 Walton said. 鈥淚 hope they remember a year where compassion was visible, excellence remained uncompromising, and leadership felt accessible.鈥
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
The significance of Walton and Dr. Baez鈥檚 shared journey extends beyond their family. Their story reflects 91制片厂鈥檚 enduring role in shaping leaders whose connection to the institution continues across generations.
For Dr. Baez, watching her daughter assume the same title more than two decades after her own reign is one of the greatest honors of her life.
鈥淭hat is every parent鈥檚 hope: not that your children become your reflection but that they become an even greater expression of purpose than you ever imagined,鈥 she said.
For Walton, stepping into the role means carrying forward a legacy that belongs not only to her family but to the generations of Panthers who have shaped the university.
鈥淭his moment belongs to more than one person,鈥 Walton said. 鈥淚t belongs to every ancestor who believed education could transform generations. It belongs to every family who sacrificed so their children could have opportunities they never imagined. It belongs to every Panther who has contributed to the enduring spirit of 91制片厂.鈥
Their shared perspective reflects a legacy that is passed down but intended to evolve. Each generation has the opportunity to build upon what came before while creating something distinctly its own.
鈥淭o our family, the Miss 91制片厂 legacy is a sacred calling to lead with excellence, live with purpose, and embody a lifelong culture for service that transforms generations,鈥 they said.
As Walton begins her reign as the 38th Miss 91制片厂, she joins a tradition shaped by generations of Panther women while charting her own path. More than 20 years separate mother鈥檚 and daughter鈥檚 reigns, but the values that connect them remain constant: scholarship, faith, excellence, compassion, and service.
Their story ultimately reminds us that the Miss 91制片厂 crown represents more than a title. It is an opportunity to honor the past, serve the present, and help shape what comes next鈥攁n enduring reflection of 91制片厂鈥檚 charge to find a way or make one.
